Rachel Nguyen, M.D.
Office: San Marcos
Specialty: Board Certified Psychiatrist
|I was born in India, but grew up in San Diego, and went to Pacific Union College in the Napa Valley area. I attended medical school and residency at Loma Linda University. In my spare time, I enjoy running, kickboxing, and playing the piano.
Q: Why did you go into Psychiatry?
A: I am passionate about serving others, and believe this field provides a unique opportunity to focus on an area of medicine that is often stigmatized. Our minds have incredible power over our bodies and play a crucial role in our overall health. I am interested in helping people to integrate mind, body, and spirit in the process of recovery.
Q: What do you think is the hardest part of recovering from mental illness?
A: "Mental illness is like fighting a war where the enemyís strategy is to convince you that the war isnít actually happening" - unknown. Developing insight into our own situations is often painful and difficult, but itís one of the most helpful things we can do to turn ourselves in the direction of recovery.
Q: What do you see as your role in treating psychiatric disorders?
A: I am an experienced psychopharmacologist, and am often consulted when a patient is exploring medication options. However, studies have shown that patients do the best long-term when medicines are combined with therapy. I provide supportive therapy during sessions and meet regularly with providers from other disciplines including MFTs, therapists, and psychologists who are involved in my patientís care.
Q: What can one expect when coming to see you?
A: I will ask you to come at least twenty minutes early to fill out an Intake questionnaire, and our first visit will be an hour long in-depth assessment. I like to take the time to truly get to know you, and often donít prescribe medicines on the first visit. I generally request that you allow me to speak to at least one close family member or friend to be able to understand your situation better and that I work as a multidisciplinary team with you, your therapist, and case manager in treatment planning.
I will meet you wherever you are in life and weíll go from there. Thank you for taking the time to visit my page.
