About Christine Calix, PhD

Dr. Calix earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Psychology in 1980. She completed her postdoctoral internship with the U.S. Navy treating patients with substance abuse disorders and military adjustment issues. Dr. Calix has extensive training and experience in her field working with adolescents and adults. She has been practicing, award-winning psychologist for over 40 years. She is licensed to practice psychology in California.

Dr. Calix provides expert supportive, compassionate, and culturally sensitive therapy for individuals and couples designed to promote growth, self-awareness, acceptance, and enhanced cooping abilities. She has extensive experience with the military as an active-duty officer in the United States Navy, as well as clinical positions with San Diego County Mental health Forensic Services, and the State of California. She has had over 20 years’ experience in private practice settings treating a variety of clients with a range of conditions. While in the Navy, she helped design a psychological screening tool for recruits. She also acted as the clinical head of several base mental health clinics as well as an outpatient staff position within the Department of Psychiatry, Naval Hospital San Diego. Her clinical experience includes psychological assessment, and treatment with individuals, couples, group and family therapy in diverse clinical settings. Her clinical specialties cover a wide range of conditions including stress management , anxiety, depression, mood disorders, life transitions, addictions, ADHD, postpartum disorders, relationship difficulties, work stress, grief, women’s issues, codependency, anger management, parenting issues, and gender identity. Dr. Calix assists female and male clients from a variety of cultural, ethnic, racial, age, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Her work experience includes academic positions with the University Of California School Of Medicine as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (volunteer), and National University, Department of Psychology. She has also taught classes and provided lectures and workshops on a variety of clinical topics, including at San Diego State University, the San Diego Psychological Association and the Naval Hospital San Diego Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Calix believes in a integrative and collaborative approach to treatment delivered within a humanistic-existential framework. She emphasizes treatment plans that are individualized to the client using evidence-based practices in a solution-focused manner to help empower the client she serves. She emphasizes proven treatment methods to help empower the individuals she serves to promote greater life balance, awareness, and holistic wellness. Her clinical approach draws from evidence-based treatment modalities including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, brief solution focused, mindfulness-based, and existential therapies.

Dr. Calix is a member in good standing of the American Psychological Association, California Psychological Association, San Diego Psychological Association and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

Born in New Orleans, Dr. Calix has been a proud California resident for over 45 years. On her time off, Dr. Calix enjoys travel, cooking and playing piano. She is the parent of a son, Christopher, a writer in San Francisco, and a beautiful cat, Sebastian.
